Vera the 1969 VW Beetle
'It'll be nice when it's finished'

Welcome to www.greenchilli.org. This website is all about Vera, a 1500 1969 VW Type 1 Beetle.

We bought the Beetle, now known as Vera, back on the 25th August 2006 from a fellow member of the Harrogate and District VW Club. My plan was to restore her to a reasonable condition (nice and clean) and to take her to lots of shows, NECPWA and HDVWC events, and to give her another 40 years of use and most importantly to enjoy owning her.

Luckily for me a good friend of mine also happened to be a very experienced classic car enthusiast/restorer and he carried out the mechanical work for me - although he doesn't really like working on VWs!

I concentrated on the jobs that I could easily do such as polishing, priming and paying for things!

So what has been Vera's story so far? I obtained her VW Birth Certificate from the Wolfsburg Factoy and this tells me that she was built on the 17th January 1969 and left the Wolfsburg factory on the 28th January 1969 with a destination of England. I have checked with the DVLA and she was first registered on the 2nd June 1969. Where she was during January and June I don't know and I don't think I ever will do.

Originally fitted with a 44 bhp 1.5 litre engine and painted L60 Peru Green she is now fitted with a 1.6 engine (AD coded so made between 8/1970 to 7/1973) and is now painted Selvasgrün Green (LA6D a 1983 Golf colour) which suits her so she won't be changing in the near future.

I don't have much historical paper work for her but I did get the sales invoice from the Herbie Hospital in Leeds when the second to last owner purchased her on 21st January 2003 for £2,200.

Unfortunately the pictures at the top of the page were taken a few years ago and they show Vera in a very favourable light. In reality she needed quite a bit of TLC (especially welding) before she could apply for her MOT. To find out how the restoration went click on the Restoration link at the bottom of the page.
